In an urban-village setting on a gently sloping property, this girls’ orphanage embraces a design that harmonizes with the surroundings. On a sloping property with fields, the aim was to evoke a homely feel rather than an institutional one. The terrain was used ingeniously, by having the main access on the first floor. A generously sized sloping roof, blending with the surroundings, addressed the challenges posed by the monsoons. The entrance features a simple partially covered front porch with a traditional Goan Balcao, offering a cosy home feel. Inside, a well-lit courtyard maximizes light and ventilation. Pseudo balconies with windows not only enhance the residential aesthetic but also serve functional purposes, discreetly concealing certain services. This design blends comfort, culture, and practicality for a space transcending institutional norm-creating a comforting and approachable environment.

PROJECT: Proposal for Sharada Mandir School
    LOCATION: Talaulim, Goa.
    YEAR: 2017 (Unbuilt)
    BUILT-UP AREA: 7,200 m2
    PROJECT TYPE: Institutional
This proposal envisions an expansive school for Elementary, Junior, Secondary, and Higher Secondary classes, considering the imminent growth of residences and institutions. The deliberate segregation of the junior and senior school occurs at the ground floor for efficient movement. An imposing entrance porch, anchored by a massive Library block, acts as an overhang, imparting a distinctive character to the façade and creating sheltered areas for students to assemble even during the monsoon season. Following an introverted design philosophy, classrooms surround a covered assembly courtyard, connected by a sweeping stairway leading to a mini auditorium. The structure features a predominantly neutral colour palette, accented by a vibrant hue on the exterior for visual interest. Mindful of vehicular movement, designated areas for buses and private vehicles ensure a seamless flow. The design continues with classrooms encircling three sides of an amphitheatre, opening up to a playground. This inclusive design accommodates unrestricted movement with large covered areas that can be fully functional, even during monsoon months.
