PROJECT: KUMI
LOCATION: Ribandar-Goa
YEAR: 2019-2021
BUILT-UP AREA: 428 m²
PROJECT TYPE: Residential
On a compact corner plot, surrounded by roads on two sides, our cost-effective home and studio embrace a varied mix of materials such as bamboo slats, matting, steel, and wood—creating simple trellises and textured soffits. Prioritising functionality, cost-effectiveness, and ease of maintenance, the design incorporates technology where required, for secure locking systems, solar energy, automated watering, and lighting. Rough sponge finish sand-faced plaster, both inside and out, contributes to its unique appeal. Overlooking a lush green space, habitable areas enjoy tranquil views. The living room, though modest, exudes volume through double height and expansive glazing. An extended ribbon window along the roof ridge enhances natural light. Strategically placed potted plants blend interior and exterior boundaries. On the third level, an open-plan loft offers captivating views of treetops, the neighborhood, and the river, enhancing the dwelling’s connection with its environment.
Being within the municipal limits and yet surrounded by nature, we were blessed to have found a plot that has an acre of open forest area as part of the colony’s common land. The site overlooks the conservation zone of Ribandar village, ensuring unobstructed views of the Mandovi river and the Salim Ali Bird sanctuary beyond.STRUCTURAL CONSULTANT: Paresh Gaitonde & Associates
